What to look for

  • Use 301 (or 308) for permanent moves — they pass ranking signals; a stray 302 keeps the old URL indexed.

What does a redirect checker do?

It follows every hop from the URL you enter to its final destination and shows each step — the status code (301, 302, 307, 308), the URL, and where it points next. That lets you spot redirect chains, loops, and the wrong redirect type before they cost you rankings or speed.

What is the difference between a 301 and a 302?

A 301 is a permanent redirect — it passes ranking signals and tells search engines the move is final. A 302 (and 307) is temporary, so engines keep the old URL indexed. Use 301 for permanent moves; a 302 left in place by mistake is a common SEO leak.

Why are redirect chains bad?

Each extra hop adds latency and can dilute link signals. A chain of three or more redirects slows the page and wastes crawl budget. Point the first URL straight at the final destination whenever you can.

What is a redirect loop?

A loop is when redirects point back to each other and never reach a real page, so the browser gives up. It usually comes from conflicting rules — for example www→non-www and http→https fighting each other. This tool flags a chain that runs too long to terminate.
